Songkran without water?
Pattaya. What is Songkran in Pattaya without water? City officials hope that it won't get boring and that tourists will still come to the seaside resort.
The Covid-19 panel is likely to propose a ban on all forms of splashing water, the use of powder, and all foam parties during the Songkran festival in April.
Entertaining activities, especially spraying water and powdering other partygoers, have to be canceled in view of the risk of new Covid-19 infections, said Minister of Culture Itthiphol Kunplome, the brother of Pattaya Mayor Sonthaya Kunplome.
The Pattaya City Council had previously announced that on April 19, the last Songkran day in Pattaya, the water festival can definitely be celebrated as it is known. But the city hall withdrew this announcement on March 15th.
Expats who are reluctant to get wet should be happy, but entrepreneurs see it differently. Who should have a reason to go to a dry Pattaya on Songkran, they ask.
It remains to be seen whether the police will actually succeed in preventing children, bar hostesses and tourists from using water pistols etc. in the event of a water ban. Leonard Brix
